Osmium is up to 80 times rarer than gold and belongs to the platinum group of precious metals. Worldwide, only an estimated few hundred kilograms of osmium are produced annually. It is one of the scarcest precious metals available for investment and jewelry. MetaMetals osmium bars are pressed from refined osmium with a guaranteed purity exceeding 99.95%, certified and delivered in sealed packaging from Austria.
Osmium is also available as osmium crystals featuring a unique crystalline sparkle, or as handcrafted osmium jewelry including rings and necklaces.
Osmium can not be cast like gold or silver. Its melting point exceeds 3,000°C, making conventional bar casting impossible. Instead, osmium bars are produced through sintering: Pure osmium powder is compressed under extreme heat and pressure into a dense, uniform bar shape.
This process creates a unique surface with a characteristic slight bluish shimmer. Osmium in its raw powder form is loaded into precision moulds and pressed at temperatures and pressures that fuse the particles into a solid structure without ever reaching the metal's melting point. In addition to that, smaller bars (1g, 1/10 oz) are also mirror polished, which gives them a unique appearance.
All osmium bars are produced in Austria, with every bar undergoing individual quality testing before sealing and certification.
How are other precious metal bars produced?
If you're looking to buy osmium, you might be surprised: despite being much rarer than gold, an osmium bar actually costs less per gram. By comparison, gold trades at approximately €60/g and platinum at approximately €30/g. Despite being roughly 80 times rarer than gold, sintered osmium bars offer one of the most accessible entry points into the world's scarcest precious metals.
The price reflects the sintering process and the limited annual production. Approximately only a couple of hundred kg of raw osmium are mined worldwide each year. Only a fraction of that is refined and processed into bars.

Sintered osmium bars are harmless and safe for direct skin contact. Only raw osmium powder is hazardous — it can react with air to form osmium tetroxide (OsO₄). All MetaMetals bars are fully processed and certified safe. No maintenance is required.

Less than 1 ton of osmium is mined worldwide each year, of which only about 100 kg is refined into bars. Despite this, an osmium bar costs approximately €46.60 per gram — less than gold (~€60/g). Rarity doesn't always mean higher price — the osmium market is younger and less liquid than the gold market. The sintering process and limited production determine the price.
