Osmium vs. Other Precious Metals: Price Comparison
| Metal | Price per gram | Price per ounce |
|---|---|---|
| Osmium (crystallized, polished) | ~56,43 $ | ~1.755,16 $ |
| Gold | ~159,29 $ | ~4.954,50 $ |
| Platinum | ~73,41 $ | ~2.283,16 $ |
| Iridium | ~254,50 $ | ~7.915,70 $ |
| Rhodium | ~343,73 $ | ~10.691,18 $ |
| Palladium | ~51,10 $ | ~1.589,48 $ |
Important: The prices above compare osmium in form of a bar with spot commodity prices of other metals. They refer to wholesales prices in unprocessed or even powder form most of the time. Crystallized osmium at 351,22 $/g is more expensive than sintered osmium (bar form) at 56,43 $/g, but it also represents a different purity and processing stage. Always compare like with like.
Why Osmium Has No Market Price
Osmium pricing works differently than that of most other precious metals. Here's why:
When you look up the gold price, you see a number determined by thousands of traders buying and selling on exchanges like COMEX and the London Bullion Market. Supply, demand, and geopolitical events shift the price in real time.
Osmium doesn't have this yet. There is no liquid exchange market for osmium, no futures contracts, and no standardized spot price set by open trading. The price of osmium is currently determined by the dealers who refine, process, and sell it — not by supply and demand from traders on an exchange. This means what you see quoted as the "osmium price" is a dealer price, not a market price in the traditional financial sense.
This doesn't mean the price is arbitrary. Dealer pricing is influenced by the cost of extraction (osmium is a byproduct of platinum and nickel mining), the cost and complexity of crystallization or sintering, the limited annual supply (estimates mention less than 1 ton worldwide), and growing demand from investors and the jewelry industry. But it does mean you won't find an osmium ticker on Bloomberg or Reuters.
For investors and collectors, the practical implication is simple: always compare prices from multiple reputable dealers and make sure you're comparing equivalent forms (crystallized vs. sintered vs. raw).
Osmium Spot Price
The spot price in finance refers to the current price for immediate purchase or delivery of an asset. For metals like gold, silver, platinum, and palladium, spot prices are well-established and publicly traded.
For osmium, the concept of a spot price exists but is limited. Currently, institutional dealers are primarily active in the osmium spot market. Private investors and retail dealers do not yet participate in osmium price discovery the way they do for gold or silver. This may change if osmium becomes tradeable in the future.
Raw Osmium vs. Crystallized Osmium: Why Prices Vary So Widely
Buyers searching for osmium online will encounter a wide price range. Understanding the differences between forms is essential:
Raw Osmium (Powder/Sponge)
Priced in the low double-digit euros per gram. Raw osmium is unprocessed and in this form is considered toxic — it reacts with oxygen in the air and forms a critical amount of osmium tetroxide (OsO₄), a dangerous gas. → More about the safety of osmium. Raw osmium is not suitable for private ownership, investment, or jewelry.
Sintered Osmium (Bars)
Priced at around 56,43 $ per gram. Sintered osmium has been processed under high pressure into a solid, non-toxic form. It is safe to handle and is often used as an investment product. MetaMetals guarantees a purity of ≥99.95% for all sintered osmium bars.
Crystallized Osmium (Uncut)
Priced at around 351,22 $ per gram. Crystallized osmium undergoes an additional, highly complex crystallization process that produces a unique crystal surface structure. After crystallization, osmium crystals retain their natural grown form — each crystal is unique. Uncut crystals are safe, certified, and suitable as collectibles or investment pieces. They are not further processed and keep their natural surface structure. Every crystallized piece is structurally unique and each piece is verified with a certificate of authenticity.
Crystallized Osmium (Cut)
Priced at around 351,22 $ per gram. Only a tiny fraction of uncut osmium crystals is suitable for further processing. Jewelry-specific pieces are "cut out" of osmium crystals via EDM (Electric Discharge Machining) to obtain "cut" osmium crystals. That's why we differ between uncut and cut. The complexity and extreme (!) scarcity of obtained material explains the price.
When comparing osmium prices online, always make sure you're comparing the same form. A "low" osmium price typically refers to raw, unprocessed osmium in powder form, which is toxic and unsuitable for investment or jewelry.
Osmium Price Volatility
The price of osmium, particularly processed osmium, can fluctuate significantly. This volatility results from osmium's rarity and the complex, costly methods required for extraction, refining and production. The small market size means even modest demand shifts can have disproportionate effects on price.
In financial terms, volatility measures how much an asset's price deviates from its average over a given period. High volatility means greater uncertainty and risk, but can also present opportunities for investors willing to accept that risk. Osmium's volatility may increase further if it becomes exchange-traded, as broader trading participation tends to amplify short-term price movements.
Growing demand from the jewelry industry and increasing recognition as an alternative investment may influence future pricing. However, since osmium is not yet exchange-traded, all forward-looking price expectations remain speculative.
