What is Iridium?

Iridium (Ir), just like osmium or rhodium, is a platinum metal and has the atomic number 77. Iridium is white-silvery in color and, just like osmium, was discovered by Smithson Tennant in 1803.

As iridium is one of the hardest metals of all, it protects against erosion, which means that iridium spark plugs last up to four times longer than normal spark plugs.

Iridium can also play an important role in the production of hydrogen.  Iridium is used here for hydrogen electrolysis. PEM electrolysis is one of the methods used to split water into oxygen and hydrogen. This type of electrolysis is dependent on iridium.
