Why osmium crystals?
Osmium crystals are pure rarity. Each piece is grown over weeks through a complex chemical vapor transport (CVT) process and develops a surface structure that exists only once.
"You are not buying a weight of precious metal — you are buying pure rarity."
— The principle behind osmium crystals
Serialized & certified — Made in Austria
Each crystal carries its own serial number, linked to a digitally signed certificate of authenticity. Purity, weight, and visual representation are permanently documented. Manufactured and tested in Austria — with a guaranteed purity of at least 99.995%.
Rare and valuable
Osmium is one of the rarest precious metals on Earth. Estimates suggest that less than 1 ton is produced annually worldwide. The crystallized form is even rarer — each piece requires weeks of controlled growth under laboratory conditions.
Unique crystal structures
Crystalline osmium reflects light differently than other precious metals. The micro-facets on each surface refract light in a bluish shimmer that changes with viewing angle. Each surface grows individually — the structure you see exists only once.

Both forms are legitimate ways to own osmium. Bars are the simpler, more accessible entry point for investors who want exposure to osmium by weight. Crystals are for buyers who value the combination of material rarity, visual uniqueness, and the fact that their specific piece will never exist again.
How osmium crystals are grown
Video: The CVT crystallization process of osmium
During the crystallization process, a so-called transport gas absorbs solid osmium. Over a period of several weeks to months, the vapor transports the bound osmium within a sealed transport vessel to a cooler end, where it slowly forms a crystalline structure under perfect conditions. The conditions — temperature, pressure, time, and gas composition — determine the success of the crystallization. The process is highly sensitive. Even a small change in parameters can make crystal growth impossible or yield an unsatisfactory result.
The growth conditions shape the final form of the crystal: the size and orientation of the facets, and the surface texture. Every crystal has a unique surface geometry, and no crystal can be reproduced. This is not a design decision but a physical inevitability of the crystallization process.
MetaMetals' crystallization is led by Dr. Alexander Wimmer in Austria, using 100% renewable energy. The process has been refined over years to produce crystals of exceptional clarity, purity and surface quality.

The images above show the actual surface structure of individual MetaMetals osmium crystals, photographed at high magnification. The micro-facets you see are the direct result of the CVT crystallization process. Some facets are bigger than others and appear like a mirror. This is why no two crystals look alike and why the visual properties of crystalline osmium make it interesting for jewelry.
